Political Identity and Participation of Mexican Immigrants in Spain (2000-2015)

Abstract:
This paper presents our current research examining the political identity and participation of Mexican immigrants in Spain. It aims at exploring their motivations, interests, and levels of political participation in Spanish politics between the years 2000 to 2015. It, first, surveys the current literature on the political identity and participation of transnational immigrants. It highlights the gap in the research on the identity and participation of migrants moving from and to countries sharing a common language and maintaining close politico-legal ties that, in principle, ease the participation of migrants between them. This paper, then, introduces the context, theoretical framework, and proposed empirical methodology for this study. It concludes that this scholarly research is opportune and necessary at a time when identity and participation are becoming increasingly important issues in the political discourse.
