Public mental health policy for the elderly population in Colombia
Abstract
This article develops an analysis of the National Policy of Human Aging and Old Age in Co-lombia 2015-2024 and of the National Mental Health Policy of 2018, with emphasis on the mental health of the elderly population, in accordance with the recommendations estab-lished in the international context, since 2002 in this area. Methodology: An analysis of each public policy and a comparative approach is carried out. Results: It is evident in the analysis of each policy and its comparison, the advances in the approaches of human rights, life course and citizen social participation. However, each of them lacks comprehensive elements and a specific approach to mental health in the elderly population. In addition, they are limited in addressing mental health in positive terms. This underestimates the high-accumulated burden of this population and their families, as well as understanding mental health as a social construction.
